Free directories to submit your startup: 385 with a free listing

Free directories are where most founders start, and a good share of them are worth the time. “Free” covers two kinds of site here: fully free directories, and freemium ones where the basic listing is free but paid options skip the queue, add a followed link or feature you on the homepage. Read the price note on each directory page before submitting, because the free tier is sometimes slow (weeks in a queue) or comes with conditions such as adding a badge to your site. The cost of a free listing is your time, so the useful question is which ones are worth an hour. Popularity (the Tranco rank), human review and a relevant audience are better signals than the number of directories you can reach. Submitting to dozens of low-quality sites does little.

The other 365, in the same order

One line each. Open a directory for its price details, link evidence, review process and how to submit.

DR is Domain Rating by Ahrefs: a 0–100 score of a site’s backlinks, higher is stronger. It isn’t a Google metric. Tranco rank is a research top-sites ranking: lower means more popular. How we check each directory

How to prioritise

  1. Free directories whose audience matches your users, with a Tranco rank.
  2. Free directories with human review: harder to get into, more weight when you do.
  3. Freemium sites where the free listing is useful on its own, without the paid add-ons.
  4. Skip free sites that require a badge or reciprocal link unless you’re happy to add it.

Questions about this list

Are free directory listings worth it?

The good ones are: a relevant audience, human review and a maintained site. A handful of those does more than a long list of sites nobody visits. Use the Tranco rank and review type above to pick.

What is the catch with free listings?

Common ones: long review queues, a nofollow link unless you pay, or a requirement to add their badge to your site. Each directory page here says which applies, where we could verify it.

Should I pay to upgrade a free listing?

Only after the free listing has shown it sends visitors. Pay for audience and visibility, not for a followed link; buying links that pass ranking value goes against Google’s spam policies.

Which of these directories give a dofollow link?

217 of the 385 had a followed (dofollow) listing link when we checked: GitHub Marketplace, Snap Store (Snapcraft), Laravel News, Uptodown, Greasy Fork, Flathub and 211 more. Directories change their link policy, so check your own listing once it is live.
