The five options
SEO content writing services: what you get and what it costs
We sell two of these five, so each cost that isn't ours links to its source.
| Option | What you get | What it costs | Fits, and watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance SEO content writer | One person writes to your brief. Keywords, briefs, edits and publishing usually stay with you. | Median rates for blog posts run 25 to 45 cents a word in the Editorial Freelancers Association's 2026 rate chart: about $325 to $585 for a 1,300-word post (our arithmetic). | Fits a few pieces that need your voice and expertise. Capacity is one person. |
| SEO content agency | Strategy, research, writing and editing, sometimes publishing and reporting. | SEO retainers averaged $3,209 a month for agencies and $1,348 for freelancers in Ahrefs' poll of 439 providers, last updated 2024. That is SEO work in general, not writing alone. | Fits teams with budget and nobody to run SEO. Ask what changes in month one. |
| AI writing or SEO tool | A draft from a prompt, or whole articles from a keyword, depending on the tool. | A monthly subscription. AI SEO tools compared on price. | Fits teams that already research, edit and publish. Check what it verifies: facts, sources and duplicates may be on you. |
| Autopilot | Plans, researches, writes, checks and publishes up to 30 articles a month. Fixes titles on pages that rank and tracks AI answers. | $49/mo founding price, then $99/mo. 7-day free trial. Autopilot Pro is $199/mo (founding price) for up to 90 articles and our team on videos, outreach and directories. | Fits SaaS founders who want steady, checked publishing. It researches public sources and can't interview your customers. |
| Done for you | We run the playbook on your site: programmatic SEO, content, technical SEO and monthly Search Console reviews. | From $999/mo at the founding rate for our first 10 clients, from $2,000/mo after. | Fits when SEO is a proven channel and you want it run for you. We take applications because it only suits some sites. |
Writing it yourself costs time instead: Orbit Media's 2026 survey puts the average blog post at 3 hours 20 minutes, so 30 posts is about 100 hours a month.
Before you pay
Ask any provider five things
Google's advice on hiring an SEO is a good start: ask for examples of past work, and be wary of guarantees.
Can I read articles you wrote for similar sites? Ours are public: real articles, unedited.
How do you research, and who checks the facts? Ask whether every source was opened.
How do you avoid competing with my existing pages? Two posts on one search split the traffic.
Who publishes, how often, and who owns the files? Get ownership and handover in writing.
What do you promise? Google says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." Walk away from a guarantee.
Where Autopilot fits
Good for steady SEO articles, not for everything
Autopilot suits a SaaS site with searchable topics: how-tos, comparisons, buyer's lists and answers. Review is on by default, so you read each article before it publishes.
It is the wrong pick when the content needs original interviews, customer stories or proprietary data, or when search depends on the map pack. For local businesses, the Google Business Profile, reviews and service-area pages usually matter more than blog posts, and Autopilot doesn't manage any of them.
Read real articles, then decide
Free for 7 days, and by default nothing goes live until you approve it.
FAQ
SEO content writing questions
Is a writer or Autopilot cheaper for 30 articles a month?
Thirty 1,300-word posts at 25 to 45 cents a word come to about $9,750 to $17,550 a month before research and editing (our arithmetic on the EFA rates). Autopilot is $49/mo at the founding price. They are not the same product: Autopilot gives you checked first drafts to review, not a writer who interviews and edits, so the gap overstates the saving.
Can I use a writer and a tool together?
Yes, and many teams do. Use software for repeatable pieces such as how-tos, comparisons and buyer's lists, and a writer for pieces that need your voice, interviews or original data.
How long before SEO content ranks?
Longer than a month. On Versely, clicks stayed at ~2 a day until around Aug 10, 2026, then climbed to ~50–90 a day. Plan on at least three months before you judge any provider, and be wary of anyone who gives you a date.
Who owns the articles?
With Autopilot, articles are published to your own site or CMS, and you can download any of them as Markdown or HTML. With a freelancer or agency, get ownership and file handover in writing before the first invoice.
Is AI-written SEO content acceptable to Google?
Google's guidance says generative AI can help with research and structure, asks you to fact-check and review AI-generated content before publishing, and targets pages generated at scale without adding value. Autopilot keeps review on by default and flags unsourced statistics and duplicates.
