What you’re looking at
A SERP is the page Google returns for one search. This tool fetches it for a keyword, a country and a device, and lays it out in order: every organic result, and between them the other elements Google adds, such as an AI Overview, a People Also Ask box, a video block or ads. The glossary calls these SERP features. Seeing them in place matters because a position is only half the story: a result in first place can start far down the screen when an AI Overview, a video block and a questions box sit above it.
Two ways to count a position
- Organic position counts blue links only, so the first organic result is #1 whatever sits above it. It’s the number on every result here (DataForSEO’s
rank_group). - Page position counts every element on the page, so the same result can be item 5. We use it to place the features, and the CSV keeps it (DataForSEO’s
rank_absolute). Both are defined in the DataForSEO docs.
Search Console counts a third way. Google says its position is the topmost position a link to your site held, averaged across queries, so a SERP check and your average position won’t match, and they’re not meant to.
What to read from it
- The format Google rewards. If the first page is mostly videos, forum threads and shopping blocks, an article is probably the wrong page to build. If it’s mostly guides, a product page probably is. That’s our heuristic, not a rule: pair it with the search intent checker.
- Who you’d be up against. For some keywords big brands, directories and communities such as Reddit and YouTube fill the page. Add your domain to see whether you’re already there.
- How crowded the top is. Count what sits above result 1, and read it against the glossary entries for People Also Ask and AI Overviews, which say what each one is and how to treat it.
Limits
This is one search, from a country rather than a city, as an anonymous searcher on the device you pick. Google personalises and localises, so your own search can differ, and the page can change between lookups. We keep each result for 48 hours. We read the first page only; for deeper positions use the keyword rank checker. To see how your own title and description will look in these results, use the SERP preview.
