How the check works
A Google rank checker answers one question: where does your site show up for this search? For each keyword we look up the live Google results from the country and device you choose and look for your domain, subdomains included. First we read the first page, the same lookup the SERP checker uses. If your domain isn’t on it, we read the first 3 pages, about 30 results. The card then shows your organic position, the URL that ranks, and the number one result, so you can see who you’re up against.
Reading a card
- #4. Your best result is the fourth blue link. Organic position ignores ads, AI Overviews and the other SERP features; when they push the result further down the screen, the card says which item it is on the page.
- Not found. Your domain isn’t in the organic results we read. We stop there, so a page at position 45 and a page that doesn’t rank at all look the same here.
- Featured snippet and AI Overview tags. They come from the first page we read: whether your domain holds the featured snippet and whether the AI Overview cites it.
Why this won’t match Search Console
A rank check is one search, from one place, at one moment. Search Console reports the topmost position your site held for each search real people made, averaged. On our own product, Versely, Search Console showed an average position of 10.8 over Jun 29 – Sep 28, 2026 (3 months), and that number isn’t any single keyword’s rank (see average position). Use Search Console for what searchers saw, and this tool for keywords you don’t rank for yet and for checking a competitor.
What to do with a position
As a rule of thumb (a heuristic, not a measured threshold), positions from about 4 to 20 are the cheapest place to gain: a better title and snippet, internal links, a stronger section. On Versely, rewriting titles and snippets on pages already ranking on pages one and two brought the biggest wins, which is what the Search Console optimizer in Autopilot does. If you’re not found for a keyword you target, check that the page is indexed with the Google index checker, then compare it with what ranks in the SERP checker.
Limits
Lookups are country-level, with no search history, and there’s no daily tracking: this is a one-off check, not a rank tracker. The deeper step is the slow part. It can take up to a minute, and if the data provider doesn’t answer in time the card says so and keeps the first-page answer. Results are kept for 48 hours.
