Keyword difficulty checker

Paste up to 20 keywords and pick a country. We look each one up and show its keyword difficulty (0 to 100), monthly searches, CPC and search intent, so you can pick the terms a new site can win.

0 of 20 keywords, each up to 80 characters. Commas also separate keywords.

Data from DataForSEO. A result is reused for up to 7 days for the same list and country, so repeating a check is instant. The whole list counts as one lookup; up to 5 lookups every 10 minutes.

Each keyword gets DataForSEO’s difficulty score (0 to 100), its average monthly searches, CPC and search intent for the country you pick. Keywords DataForSEO has no data for are left blank, never estimated.

What this score is

Keyword difficulty (KD), also called SEO difficulty, is DataForSEO’s 0 to 100 estimate of how hard it is to reach Google’s top 10 for a keyword in one country. It is mainly a link score. For each of the top 10 organic results, DataForSEO rates the page and its domain by backlinks, counting the page for 90% and the domain for 10%. It takes the higher of the median and the average across the ten, then rescales that to 0 to 100. The API docs call the scale logarithmic.

Searches is the average monthly figure, CPC the average cost per click advertisers have historically paid for the keyword, and intent DataForSEO’s label for what the searcher wants: informational, navigational, commercial or transactional.

How it differs from Ahrefs and Semrush

All three look at the links of the top 10 results. They differ in what else goes in.

ToolWhat its KD is based on
DataForSEO (this tool)A backlink-based rank for the page and the domain of each top 10 result: 90% page, 10% domain.
AhrefsThe number of referring domains the top 10 pages have. On-page factors are left out.
SemrushAmong other factors: referring domains, the dofollow and nofollow mix, the Authority Score of the ranking domains and SERP-related qualities of the keyword.

So the same keyword can score quite differently in each tool. Compare keywords within a tool, never across tools. The keyword difficulty glossary entry has the wider picture.

What a new domain should look for

A new domain has few links, so start with low-KD keywords, where a better page can beat barely linked results. Move up as you earn links. This banding is our rule of thumb, not a DataForSEO or Google scale:

KDOur labelWhat we’d do
0–20LowGood first targets. Open the results, then write the page.
21–40MediumReachable with a page that answers the search better than the top results, plus a few links.
41–60HighWin easier terms in the same topic first, then come back.
61–100Very highNot for a new domain yet.

KD is only half the decision. Read it with searches and intent: a KD 5 keyword with 10 searches a month usually isn’t worth a page. Then open the SERP checker. Forums, thin pages and old posts in the top 10 mean the keyword is probably easier than its score; big brands with deep link profiles mean it is harder.

Limits

KD is mostly built from links, so it says nothing about whether your page is better, which is the part you control. Searches are approximate averages. DataForSEO has no data for some phrases; those rows show a dash, and we never estimate a number.

Questions

What is a good keyword difficulty score?

There isn't a universal one, because how hard a keyword is depends on your site's links. As a rule of thumb for a new domain, we'd start at 0 to 20 and treat 21 to 40 as reachable if your page is clearly better than what ranks. That is our heuristic, not a DataForSEO or Google threshold. Whatever the score, open the live results before you write: weak or outdated pages in the top 10 make a keyword easier than its number.

Why is the keyword difficulty different in Ahrefs or Semrush?

Each tool computes its own score from its own link database. Ahrefs bases KD on the referring domains of the top 10 pages. Semrush also uses the Authority Score of the ranking domains and SERP-related qualities of the keyword. DataForSEO rates the page and the domain of each top 10 result from backlinks and weights the page more. The scores aren't on one scale, so compare keywords within a tool, not across tools.

Is keyword difficulty the same in every country?

No. DataForSEO says keyword difficulty is country-specific, because the results Google shows can differ a lot by location. The same keyword can score differently in the United States and the United Kingdom, so pick the country your customers search from.

Why is a keyword blank or marked as no data?

DataForSEO has no data for it in that country. That happens with very new, very rare or very specific phrases. We leave the row blank and never fill in an estimate, because a guessed number looks as real as a measured one. Try a shorter, broader phrase, or another country.

How fresh is the keyword data?

Per DataForSEO's docs, search volume and CPC are based on Google Ads data and updated monthly. We reuse each result for up to 7 days, so repeating the same list in the same country is instant, and every result shows the date it was fetched and when DataForSEO last refreshed the keywords. For the position a page holds today, use the keyword rank checker.
