SEO automation: what's safe to automate, and what isn't

Automate the work you can check afterwards: research, briefs, publishing pace, internal links, title fixes and reports. Don't automate link buying, pages by the thousand or indexing tricks. Here is the line, and how Autopilot respects it.

Safe to automate

Seven SEO jobs worth automating

The test we use: can the result be checked, by a rule, a number or you? If so, automate it.

SEO jobs that are safe to automate, what the software does for each and what keeps it safe
JobWhat the software doesWhat keeps it safe
Keyword research and planningPulls volume, difficulty and intent. Starts from queries you already get in Search Console and skips topics you cover. You can edit or drop any planned topic.
Briefs and draftsReads what ranks now, collects facts with their sources, then writes to a fixed contract.Duplicate, link and source checks run before a draft can go further.
Publishing paceSchedules posts to your CMS under a daily cap set by your domain's age.A hard ceiling of 20 a day, however you set it.
Internal linksAdds at least 3 links from each article to pages on your site.A link to a page it hasn't seen on your site fails the check.
Title and snippet fixesFinds pages at positions 3 to 20 that get fewer clicks than that position usually earns, and drafts a new title and description. You approve, edit or reject each one. It compares the 28 days before and after.
ReportingEmails clicks and impressions against the week before, what was published and what awaits approval, every Monday.Read-only. It changes nothing on your site.
AI-answer trackingEvery two weeks, asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude 25 questions from your category and records who gets named. Trials start with Perplexity and Gemini.Read-only. It doesn't cover Google AI Overviews.

Google writes title links itself and can show a different one, so treat a new title as a test (Google on title links).

Leave alone

Three SEO tasks you shouldn't automate

  1. 01

    Link buying and swaps

Google's spam policies list "Using automated programs or services to create links to your site" beside buying or selling links and excessive link exchanges. Autopilot finds pages that link to your rivals or mention you unlinked, and drafts the email. You send it.

  2. 02

    Pages by the thousand

Google calls it scaled content abuse: many pages generated mainly to rank, however they're made. Autopilot caps its pace and blocks near-duplicates for that reason.

  3. 03

    Indexing tricks

Google's Indexing API is only for job posting and livestream pages, and abuse can get access revoked. Asking Search Console to recrawl the same URL again doesn't speed anything up.

How Autopilot does it

The safe parts, automated, with you in the loop

Review is on by default. Each article waits for your approval before it publishes, and you can switch that off per site. Google's guidance on AI content is to fact-check and review it before publishing, so leave review on until you trust the output.

Every draft also passes quality gates first: duplicates, sources, links and honesty checks. A draft that fails goes back for a rewrite. See the checks, or the whole pipeline.

Free for 7 days. By default, nothing goes live until you approve it.

Choosing a tool

Five questions for any SEO automation tool

  1. Does it cap its publishing pace? Ask for the number per day and what sets it.

  2. Can you see what each draft passed? Look for duplicate, source and link checks, not one score.

  3. Does it fix pages you already have? On Versely, title rewrites on pages already ranking were our biggest win.

  4. Does it trade or sell links? Both are on Google's link spam list.

  5. Can you leave with your content? It should sit in your CMS, with a Markdown or HTML download.

FAQ

SEO automation questions

Is SEO automation safe for my site?

It depends on what you automate. Google's policies target content and links made mainly to manipulate rankings, however they're produced. Research, briefs, reporting and title fixes carry little risk. Mass-produced pages, bought or swapped links and indexing tricks carry a lot.

Do I still need a person?

Yes. Someone decides your positioning, checks claims about your product, approves what goes live and reads the results. Autopilot keeps review on by default for that reason.

How much does SEO automation cost?

Autopilot is $49/mo at the founding price for the first 100 customers, then $99/mo, with a 7-day free trial (card required). Done-for-you SEO, where we run it for you, is from $999/mo.

Can I automate SEO reporting?

Yes, and it is the lowest-risk place to start. Autopilot emails a report every Monday: clicks and impressions against the week before, the articles published, AI visibility when a check ran, and anything waiting for your approval.

Will automation get my pages indexed faster?

No. Google decides what to index. Its Indexing API is limited to job posting and livestream pages, and asking Search Console to crawl the same URL again doesn't speed it up. A sitemap and internal links are what help.
