The best SEO tools for startups, by stage

Most startups buy SEO tools in the wrong order: a big suite first, then no time to use it. The order that worked for us on Versely, our own product, was free foundations first (Search Console, a crawler), then publishing steadily, then paying for research once we knew what we were missing.

This list follows that order. Prices are from each vendor's own site, at the time of writing (September 2026). We make one product listed here, and it's labelled.

Disclosure: LaunchRanked is our product. Where we list it, we say so, and we place it under the use case it fits rather than at the top by default. Everything else here is from the vendors’ own sites or our research, and we say where they’re better.

At a glance

Grouped by use case; order within a group is not a ranking. Prices at the time of writing (September 2026).

How we chose

  • Tools a small team can afford and actually use weekly.
  • Free options first, because they're enough for longer than most people think.
  • Order within a stage is not a ranking.

Frequently asked questions

What SEO tools does a startup need first?

Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a crawler. All three can be free. Add a paid suite once you're doing keyword and competitor research every week.

Should a startup buy Ahrefs or Semrush?

Only if someone will use it weekly. Otherwise start with Ahrefs Free and Search Console, and spend on publishing consistently.

How fast should a startup publish?

Steadily. We published about 2,500 posts to Versely in one month and Google throttled indexing. Around 20 a day proved safe for us, and smaller sites should go slower.
