The best keyword research tools, by use case

Keyword research tools answer different questions. How many people search this? Can a small site rank for it? Which keywords belong on the same page? A big database is only one of those jobs.

Grouped by job, not ranked. Data claims and prices are from each vendor's own site, at the time of writing (September 2026). We don't sell keyword research, so none of these is ours. Once your site has impressions, remember Search Console's queries report: it's keyword research for your own site, free.

How we chose

  • Each tool publishes its limits and data claims on its own site.
  • We flag credit systems and regional pricing, because they change the real cost.
  • Order within a group is not a ranking.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best free keyword research tool?

For your own site, Google Search Console's queries report. For new ideas, KWFinder's free tier (5 lookups a day) and Google Trends are good starts.

Are keyword volumes accurate?

They're estimates, and tools disagree. Use them to compare keywords, not as exact numbers.

Do I need keyword research if I use an AI SEO autopilot?

Not for our Autopilot, which plans from your Search Console data. Research tools are still useful for exploring new markets.
