How to use it

  1. Describe the post: what’s in it and what it’s about. The more specific, the more specific the tags.
  2. Add your niche or community, and a place if the post is local.
  3. Copy the set of 5, or swap tags in from the alternatives. Open each tag in Instagram to see the posts already there before you use it.

What hashtags do, and what they don’t

A hashtag files a public post on that tag’s page, where people who browse or search the tag can find it. That’s the job Instagram’s help center describes. A tag doesn’t make Instagram show the post to more people by itself, and with only 5 slots, each one should earn its place.

  • Specific beats generic. #RenterFriendlyDecor reaches people looking for exactly that. #instagood is attached to everything, so it says nothing about your post. We drop tags like it.
  • Mix the exact topic with the wider community: two or three tags for what the post shows, two or three for the niche, one for the place if it matters.
  • CamelCase helps. #RenterFriendlyDecor is easier to read than #renterfriendlydecor, including for people using screen readers.

Honest limits

These are suggestions from a language model, not Instagram data: no post counts, no trends, no way to tell if a tag is busy or quiet. Check each tag’s page in the app. To write the caption that goes with them, use the Instagram caption generator.

Questions

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Up to 5 on a post or Reel. Instagram announced the change on 18 December 2025, and its help center now says you can use up to 5. Its developer docs still mention the old limit of 30.

Do hashtags increase reach?

Not by themselves. Instagram's help center describes what they do: a public post with a hashtag appears on that hashtag's page, where people browsing the tag can find it. Whether anyone there stops for your post depends on the post.

Should I use the same hashtags on every post?

Use the tags that describe each post. A set pasted under everything ends up describing nothing in particular. Keep a few community tags you use often and change the topic tags post by post.

Where do the suggestions come from?

From an AI model reading your description. It has no access to Instagram's data, so it doesn't know how many posts use a tag or how active it is. Open a tag's page in Instagram before you rely on it.
