Where to submit a Mac app: 15 directories
Mac users find apps through a mix of editorial sites, curated lists, download sites and the Mac App Store. Many good Mac apps are sold outside the App Store, so directories that list direct-download apps matter more here than on iOS. Visitors look for native design, a clear price (one-time or subscription) and a trial. Say which macOS versions you support and whether the app is built for Apple silicon. If it lives in the menu bar or runs in the background, say so in the first line so people know what to expect after installing. Download sites often want a direct link to a signed, notarised DMG and a version history, so keep a stable download URL. Should my Mac app be in the Mac App Store to get listed?
No. Plenty of Mac directories list apps sold directly, and some prefer it. What they do expect is a signed and notarised app, a trial or free version, and a download link that doesn’t change with every release.
What makes a Mac app listing convincing?
Screenshots that look like macOS (real window chrome, light and dark mode), the supported macOS versions, whether it runs natively on Apple silicon, and the price model stated plainly.
Are software download sites still worth it for Mac apps?
Some are, especially those that are well maintained and show version history. Avoid sites that wrap your installer in their own downloader or bundle offers; check how an existing listing downloads before you submit.
