What launch assets do you need?
Also called: launch kit, gallery images, launch media, demo video
Definition
Launch assets are the materials you prepare before launching: product name, tagline, short and long descriptions, logo, screenshots or gallery images, a demo video, and links. Every platform and directory asks for some version of them.
Launch assets, explained
Every launch platform and directory asks for the same things in slightly different shapes. Preparing them once, carefully, saves hours and keeps your listings consistent. Product Hunt's own preparation guide gives a useful baseline: a tagline of at most 60 characters with no gimmicks, a description of at most 500 characters, a square thumbnail (it recommends 240×240), and at least two gallery images, with 1270×760 recommended.
The tagline does the most work. It's what people see in a feed before deciding to click. Say what the product does and for whom, in plain words. Clever taglines lose to clear ones.
Gallery images should tell the story in order: the problem or promise, the product doing its main job, the key features, and proof such as results or quotes you're allowed to use. Show the real interface, readable at small sizes. A short demo video, often one to two minutes, lets people see the product working without signing up.
Write descriptions in three lengths: one line, one paragraph and a few paragraphs. Directories will ask for all three at different times. Use the same name, category and core description everywhere, which helps both people and AI systems recognize you consistently.
Keep everything in one folder with the dimensions noted, plus your logo in PNG and SVG, a founder photo, and your links. It doubles as your press kit.
Why it matters for founders
Launches and directory submissions all need the same materials. Preparing them once keeps your listings consistent, and a clear tagline and gallery decide whether people click at all.
Example
A founder prepares a 52-character tagline, three description lengths, five 1270×760 gallery images and a 90-second demo. The same kit is used for Product Hunt, three weekly platforms and 40 directories.
Common mistakes
- Writing a different tagline and description for every platform.
- Using mockups that don't match the real product.
- Taglines that are clever but don't say what the product does.
