Product Hunt-style maker comment template

The maker comment is the first comment under your launch, written by you. Product Hunt's launch guide says it should introduce the team and product, cover key features, who it's for, your story and pricing, and ask for feedback rather than upvotes. The same structure works on LaunchRanked and other launch boards.

Use it for

  • Product Hunt launches.
  • Your LaunchRanked product page.
  • Any launch board that allows a first comment.

Limits and rules

  • Product Hunt taglines are limited to 60 characters; gallery images are recommended at 1270×760 with at least two.[1]
  • Product Hunt's guidance: ask for feedback, not upvotes; a humble, helpful tone works best.[1]

The template

Copy it, then replace everything in [BRACKETS]. Delete lines that don't apply rather than leaving them vague.

Maker comment template
Hey everyone, I'm [NAME], [ROLE] of [PRODUCT].

[PRODUCT] [WHAT IT DOES] for [WHO IT'S FOR].

Why we built it:
[2-3 SENTENCES OF STORY - THE MOMENT YOU HIT THE PROBLEM]

What you can do with it today:
- [FEATURE -> OUTCOME]
- [FEATURE -> OUTCOME]
- [FEATURE -> OUTCOME]

Pricing: [FREE TIER / PLANS IN ONE LINE]
[OPTIONAL: LAUNCH OFFER, IF REAL AND TIME-LIMITED]

What's next: [1-2 THINGS ON THE ROADMAP]

We'd love your feedback, especially on [SPECIFIC QUESTION]. I'll be here all day answering questions.

How to fill it in

  1. [STORY]

    A specific moment, not a mission statement.

  2. [FEATURE -> OUTCOME]

    Pair each feature with what the user gets from it.

  3. [SPECIFIC QUESTION]

    Invite a useful answer: "Is the setup clear?" beats "Thoughts?".

Filled example

Fictional example. Paperlark is a fictional product we made up for these examples: an invoice-reminder tool for freelancers that sends polite follow-ups when a client pays late. Names, prices and details are invented to show the template filled in; they aren't a real company or real results.

Example (fictional product)
Hey everyone, I'm Sam, founder of Paperlark.

Paperlark sends polite reminders for late invoices, for freelancers and small studios.

Why we built it:
Last year I had three invoices overdue at once and hadn't chased any of them. Writing "just following up" emails felt awkward, so I kept putting it off, and got paid six weeks late.

What you can do with it today:
- Forward an invoice -> reminders scheduled automatically
- Pick a tone (friendly, firm, final) -> no more writing awkward emails
- Mark it paid -> reminders stop instantly

Pricing: free for 3 invoices a month, $9/month for unlimited.

What's next: Stripe and QuickBooks connections so you don't have to forward invoices.

We'd love your feedback, especially on the reminder wording. I'll be here all day answering questions.

Do

  • Post it the moment the launch goes live.
  • Keep it scannable with short sections.
  • Answer every comment.
  • Mention real limits.

Don't

  • Don't ask for upvotes.
  • Don't paste your landing page.
  • Don't invent launch-day discounts you'll quietly extend.
  • Don't use jargon only your team understands.
