Beta invite email template

A beta invite is a request for help, so it should say exactly what help you need. Good testers want to know what's ready, what's broken on purpose, how long it takes and where to report problems. For mobile apps, the invite usually points to a TestFlight public link or a Google Play closed test.

Use it for

  • Inviting early users before launch.
  • Recruiting testers for Google Play's closed test or TestFlight.
  • Testing a big new feature with existing customers.

Limits and rules

  • TestFlight allows up to 10,000 external testers and public invite links; external builds need Beta App Review.[1]
  • New personal Google Play accounts need 12 testers opted in for 14 continuous days; ask testers to stay opted in.[2]

Copy it, then replace everything in [BRACKETS]. Delete lines that don't apply rather than leaving them vague.

Filled example

Fictional example. Paperlark is a fictional product we made up for these examples: an invoice-reminder tool for freelancers that sends polite follow-ups when a client pays late. Names, prices and details are invented to show the template filled in; they aren't a real company or real results.

Example (fictional product)
SUBJECT: Want early access to Paperlark? (beta invite)

Hi Priya,

I'm building Paperlark, a tool that sends polite reminders for late invoices, and I'd like you to be one of 20 beta testers.

What's ready: forwarding invoices, choosing a tone, and scheduled reminders.
What's rough: scanned PDFs don't parse yet, so you may need to type the amount.
What I'm asking: use it for your next two unpaid invoices over the next two weeks, then tell me whether the reminders felt right for your clients.
Time needed: about 10 minutes.

Do

  • Keep the group small enough to talk to everyone.
  • Set a time frame.
  • Thank testers publicly (with permission) at launch.
  • Follow up once if you hear nothing.

Don't

  • Don't call it a beta if you won't change anything based on feedback.
  • Don't hide known issues.
  • Don't promise a thank-you you won't deliver.

FAQ

How many beta testers do I need?

Enough to see patterns, few enough to talk to each one. For new Google Play personal accounts, you need at least 12 opted in for 14 days before production.

How do I invite iOS beta testers?

Use TestFlight: internal testers from your team, or up to 10,000 external testers by email or a public link after Beta App Review.

What should I ask beta testers?

One specific question tied to a real task, plus an easy way to report bugs.
