SEO & AI search playbook for Shopify apps

Shopify merchants search for tasks, not apps. “How to add a size chart on Shopify” or “Shopify bundle discounts” are the searches that lead to installs. Your website's job is to answer those tasks and hand off to your App Store listing.

The App Store listing has its own rules. Shopify's requirements prohibit keyword stuffing in the subtitle, statistics and data in listing content, and reviews or testimonials in the listing. Anything you'd normally use to persuade has to live on your own site.

Searches to plan around

Query patterns and the intent behind them. We don’t quote search volumes: check your own Search Console for the ones you already appear for.

  • “how to [task] on Shopify”, “Shopify [feature]”

    Task

The main entry point. Show how to do it natively if possible, then where your app helps.

  • “best Shopify app for [job]”

    Shortlist

Listicles and the App Store itself rank. Get into good listicles and write a fair one.

  • “[your app] vs [competitor app]”

    Choose

Merchants compare apps on price, speed impact and theme compatibility.

  • “[theme] [feature] not working”

    Troubleshooting

Theme-specific issues. Pages per popular theme can be very useful if the fix really differs.

Page families that work

  • Task tutorials

    /guides/add-size-chart-shopify

Screenshots of the admin, the native way, and the app way. Each task has different steps.

  • Theme compatibility pages

    /themes/dawn

Only where setup or behaviour differs by theme. Include screenshots.

  • Comparison pages

    /compare/you-vs-other-app

Pricing tiers, store speed considerations, features. Dated.

  • Case examples

    /examples/…

Stores using the app, with their permission, showing the result.

Risky page types

  • Stuffing the App Store listing

Shopify's requirements say not to add keywords to your subtitle to improve search, and ban stats and testimonials in listing content. Breaking them risks the listing.

  • Theme pages that are all the same

If setup is identical across themes, one page with a compatibility table is better than dozens of copies.

Technical pitfalls

  1. Your site competes with your listing for your brand

That's fine. Make the site the fuller answer (docs, tutorials, pricing detail) and link to the listing for install.

  2. Docs on a help-desk platform with default titles

Help-desk articles often have generic titles. Rename them around the task merchants search.

  3. Screenshots showing old admin UI

Shopify's admin changes. Outdated screenshots undermine tutorials; date them and refresh the popular ones.

How AI assistants answer questions in this category

Merchants ask assistants “how do I do X on Shopify?” and “which app should I use for Y?”. Assistants answer the how-to from Shopify's own docs and tutorials they retrieve, and build app shortlists from listicles, community threads and App Store pages. Tutorials that cover the native option honestly are more likely to be trusted and cited.

What tends to earn a citation

  • Tutorials with the exact admin path (“Settings → …”), which answers can quote.
  • Clear, text-based pricing and a note on store speed impact.
  • Consistent app description between your site and the App Store listing.

  • Shopify community and partner ecosystem

Agencies, theme developers and experts recommend apps. Partner integrations with other apps also produce links.

  • E-commerce blogs and newsletters

Merchant-focused newsletters feature useful apps. See newsletters.

  • E-commerce and SaaS directories

Directory lists that fit Shopify apps

Each directory is checked on its own site: price, link type and review process. We never sell links.

Frequently asked questions

Can we put keywords in our Shopify App Store subtitle?

Shopify's requirements say not to add keywords to your subtitle to improve search. Describe what the app does.

Where can we use testimonials and stats?

On your own website. Shopify's requirements don't allow them in the App Store listing.

Should tutorials mention the native Shopify way?

Yes. It builds trust, and merchants who need more will see why your app helps.

Do theme-specific pages work?

When the setup really differs by theme. Otherwise use one page with a compatibility table.
