What is Google AI Mode?

Also called: Google AI Mode, AI Mode in Search

Definition

AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search for questions that need exploration, reasoning or comparison. It answers with an AI-generated response, accepts follow-up questions, and links to supporting web pages.

AI Mode (Google), explained

Google announced AI Mode's rollout to everyone in the U.S. on May 20, 2025, after testing it in Search Labs, and has expanded it since. Its Search Central documentation describes AI Mode as particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed: questions that previously took several searches.

The difference from AI Overviews is mostly format and depth. An AI Overview is a summary that appears above regular results for some queries. AI Mode is a separate, chat-like mode where the response is the main event and people can keep asking follow-ups. Google notes the two may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show can differ for the same question.

Both use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and Google says this lets them show a wider and more diverse set of links than a classic results page. For a smaller site, that's the opening: you don't need to rank for the broad question if you're the clearest source for one of its sub-questions.

Eligibility works like normal Search. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. Pages must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Controls such as nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex apply, and they affect regular results too.

Measurement is limited. Google includes AI Mode traffic in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, without a separate filter. Watch for longer, conversational queries appearing in your data, and compare engagement from search traffic in your analytics.

Why it matters for founders

AI Mode handles exactly the research-heavy questions buyers ask before choosing a product. Being one of its linked sources comes from ordinary SEO done well, not a separate channel.

Example

Someone asks AI Mode to compare three ways to get a new SaaS product its first backlinks. The answer draws on a launch platform guide, a directory list and a digital PR explainer, each linked from its part of the answer.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for special AI Mode markup. Google says none is needed.
  • Expecting a separate AI Mode report in Search Console. It's counted inside Web search.
  • Only targeting broad head terms instead of the sub-questions fan-out searches for.
