What is a marketplace listing for software?

Also called: app store listing, integration marketplace, app directory listing

Definition

A marketplace listing is a page for your product inside another platform's app store or integration directory, such as the Shopify App Store, Chrome Web Store or Slack Marketplace, where that platform's users find and install it.

Marketplace listing, explained

Marketplaces put you where buyers already are. Someone looking for a Shopify reviews app searches the Shopify App Store before Google. A team that lives in Slack browses Slack's directory. For products built on or around a platform, the marketplace can be the main acquisition channel, not a side one.

Each marketplace has its own rules, review process and ranking. Most review submissions before listing, check that the app follows their technical and policy requirements, and rank listings using some mix of relevance, installs, ratings and engagement that they don't fully publish. Read the requirements before you build; rejections and delays are common.

Treat the listing like a landing page. A clear name and tagline, screenshots of the real product, a description that answers "what does this do in my workflow", honest pricing, and a support contact. Search within the marketplace works on the words in your listing, so use the terms buyers type there.

Reviews matter more on marketplaces than almost anywhere else, because they're shown next to your listing. Ask happy users for honest reviews at a natural moment, and respond to bad ones calmly. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones; marketplaces remove apps for it.

Listings also help SEO indirectly. Marketplace pages often rank on Google for "[platform] + [job]" searches and give you a relevant link and mention. And they're one more consistent description of your product for AI assistants to find.

Why it matters for founders

If your product integrates with a big platform, its marketplace may bring your best-fit users with less effort than any other channel. The listing itself is a landing page worth real attention.

Example

A Shopify app for bundling products gets most of its installs from the Shopify App Store search for "bundles", and its listing page ranks on Google for "Shopify bundle app" too.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the listing as an afterthought with placeholder screenshots.
  • Ignoring the marketplace's review requirements until submission.
  • Buying or incentivizing positive reviews.
