What is a brand mention?

Also called: web mention, AI mention, brand citation

Definition

A brand mention is any place your company or product name appears on the web, in articles, forums, reviews, directories or AI answers, whether or not it links to your site.

Brand mention, explained

Links get most of the attention in SEO, but most of the web talks about brands without linking. A newsletter recommends your tool. A Reddit thread compares you with a competitor. A review site lists you. An AI assistant names you in an answer. All of those are mentions.

In AI search, the distinction between mentions and citations is useful. A citation is a link to your page shown as a source. A mention is your name appearing in the answer text, with or without a link. Citations tend to come from live retrieval of your pages. Mentions can come from training data or from other people's pages that the assistant retrieved. That's why you can be mentioned in an answer that cites only other sites.

Consistency is the part you control. When many independent sources describe you the same way, same name, same category, same one-line description, models and search engines can connect them to one entity and repeat that description. When your listings say different things, or your name collides with another product, answers get muddled.

Tracking mentions is worth a little effort. Set up alerts for your brand name and common misspellings. Review what's said on communities where your buyers hang out. For AI, track a fixed set of prompts and record whether you're mentioned, cited or absent. Each mention that isn't linked is also a possible link reclamation opportunity if the context fits.

Don't manufacture mentions. Fake reviews, sock-puppet forum posts and paid placements dressed as editorial are easy to spot, often against platform rules, and can end up as the very text an AI quotes about you.

Why it matters for founders

AI assistants decide how to describe you from what the web says about you. Consistent, genuine mentions shape that picture even when nobody links to you.

Example

A founder notices that assistants call their product "an AI writing tool" when it's a video editor. The cause is an old directory listing copied to a dozen sites. They update the listings, and answers slowly change.

Common mistakes

  • Only counting linked mentions and ignoring what the rest of the web says.
  • Using different taglines and categories across listings and profiles.
  • Seeding fake reviews or forum posts that later get quoted back.
