What is AI referral traffic?

Also called: AI traffic, LLM referral traffic, ChatGPT traffic

Definition

AI referral traffic is the visits your site gets when people click links in AI assistants' answers, such as citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.

AI referral traffic, explained

When an assistant cites your page and someone clicks, the visit usually arrives with a referrer from the assistant's domain: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com or copilot.microsoft.com, for example. OpenAI's publisher FAQ also says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so those clicks are easy to spot.

Google's AI features are the exception. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in Search Console's overall data under the Web search type, and it arrives as normal Google organic traffic in analytics. There's no separate referrer for it.

To see the rest, build one analytics segment or channel group for AI assistants. Match the known referrer domains and the chatgpt.com UTM source. Then compare the segment's landing pages, engagement and conversions with organic search. Expect small numbers at first, and expect them to be undercounted: some apps and privacy settings strip referrers, which pushes visits into "direct".

The value is often in the quality, not the volume. Someone who clicks a citation has already read a summary and chosen to go deeper, so conversion rates can look different from ordinary search. Judge the channel on outcomes, not raw sessions.

Use it alongside other signals. Referral data shows clicks, not how often you were mentioned without a click. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows Copilot citations directly, and a tracked prompt set shows mentions across assistants. Together they give a fair picture of whether your AI visibility is growing.

Why it matters for founders

AI traffic is small for most sites today, which is exactly why it's easy to miss. Segmenting it now shows which pages assistants trust and gives you a baseline as the channel grows.

Example

A founder adds an "AI assistants" channel in analytics matching five referrer domains. It shows that most AI visits land on two comparison pages and convert to trials at a higher rate than blog traffic.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for a separate AI Overviews referrer. Google reports it as organic search.
  • Treating AI referrals as complete. Some visits lose their referrer.
  • Judging the channel by sessions alone instead of conversions.
