SEO MCP servers: what they do and which ones exist

Ask an AI assistant about your site's SEO and it answers from what it learned in training, which can be a year old and never included your site. An SEO MCP server fixes that. It gives the assistant tools: look up this keyword, read my Search Console clicks, audit this URL right now.

There are now more than 20 of them, from the big SEO suites to single-purpose community projects. This is what they do, which ones exist as of September 2026, and how to choose.

Short answer: an SEO MCP server connects an AI assistant to live SEO data or checks. They fall into four groups: SEO data platforms (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and others, mostly on paid plans), live search results and scraping (SerpApi, Bright Data, Firecrawl), your own analytics (Google Analytics officially, Search Console only through community servers), and crawlers and page checks (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Lighthouse, LaunchRanked). Pick by the data you need, then by how it connects.

What MCP is

The Model Context Protocol is the standard these servers use. Its official introduction puts it this way: "MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems." And: "Think of MCP like a USB-C port for AI applications."

A server offers tools, each with a name, a description and inputs. The assistant decides when to call one, the server runs it, and the result comes back into the conversation. The same server works in every client that supports MCP: ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and many others.

Servers come in two kinds:

• Remote servers run at a URL, like https://example.com/mcp, and you usually sign in with OAuth. These work in web apps like ChatGPT and Claude.
• Local servers run on your computer, often started with npx or pipx, and use an API key or a credentials file. These suit coding agents and desktop apps.

What an SEO MCP server adds

Without tools, an assistant can explain SEO but can't see your site. With them, it can do the work in one conversation: pull the keywords a competitor ranks for, compare them with your Search Console queries, audit the page that should rank, and, in a coding agent, fix the page's code.

That last part is why coding agents and SEO fit well together. Most technical SEO problems live in templates, metadata and config files. We wrote up what happened when we pointed Claude Code at our own site: 14 checks, three fixes, and a clean re-check.

The SEO MCP servers that exist

Everything below comes from each maker's documentation, repository or directory listing, checked on September 29, 2026. Plans and limits change, so check the linked page before you sign up.

SEO data platforms

Keywords, backlinks, rankings and traffic estimates, from the tools SEO teams already pay for. Most spend your plan's API units.

Live search results and page content

For when the assistant needs today's results page or the text of a competitor's page. These fetch content from the open web, which matters for safety (see below).

Your own analytics

Your real clicks, impressions and sessions. The surprise here is Search Console.

Google hasn't published a Search Console MCP server. It isn't on Google's list of its own MCP servers, and we found no official Bing Webmaster Tools server either, so the options are community projects. Read their tool lists before connecting. Some can change your account: mcp-gsc can delete sitemaps, and the Bing server has a tool that removes a site.

Crawlers and page checks

These look at your pages the way a search engine would.

That's our own server in the last row, so here's what it doesn't do: it has no keyword database, backlink index or rank tracking. It checks live pages and tells your agent what to fix. For keyword and link data, pair it with one of the platforms above.

Which clients support remote servers

• Claude: custom connectors take a remote server's URL, usually with an OAuth sign-in. Anthropic's help article lists them for Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with Free users limited to one custom connector. Claude also has a directory of reviewed connectors.
• ChatGPT: developer mode adds any remote server and is available on Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. Published plugins appear in ChatGPT's plugin directory.
• Coding agents: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and most others take both remote and local servers.

How to choose

1. Start from the data you need. Keyword and backlink research means a data platform. Your own performance means Search Console and Analytics. "What's wrong with this page" means a crawler or a live checker.
2. Prefer the tool you already pay for. Most platform servers use your existing plan's API units, so you can try one without a new subscription. Check whether your tier includes API access first.
3. Match the connection to your assistant. Remote servers with OAuth work in ChatGPT and Claude on the web. Local servers need a desktop app or a coding agent.
4. Check which tools can change things. Most SEO tools only read. The ones that submit URLs, delete sitemaps or remove sites deserve a closer look before you connect.
5. Try it on a page you know. Run one audit or one keyword lookup on something where you already know the answer, and see whether the result matches.

Safety

An MCP server runs code on your behalf and puts text in front of your assistant, so treat it like any other integration with account access.

• Connect only servers you trust. Anthropic's guidance: "Only connect Claude to servers built and hosted by organizations and applications you trust."
• Watch for prompt injection. From the Claude Code docs: "Servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection risk." SERP and scraping servers fetch other people's pages by design.
• Keep a person in charge of writes. The MCP specification says that "there SHOULD always be a human in the loop with the ability to deny tool invocations." ChatGPT's developer mode treats any tool not marked read-only as a write action and asks before running it.
